Everyone loves something wrapped nicely in a box, on special occasions like Valentine, but could you give something more thoughtful this year? Last year, I was cash strapped and wanted to get a nice present for my boyfriend. I couldn’t deal with the typical valentine day oppression, where a lot of money would be spent to impress people, so I started looking for alternatives. However, It was difficult getting something in the Nigerian market that would match my budget and emotions.  After pondering for a few days I had my eureka moment!!! It dawned on me that I didn’t have to follow the herd and buy something I could not afford. I did not have to be bankrupt. Why?

I had found a gift that was quirky, expressive and affordable. Some of you are wondering what I could possibly be talking about. In two words, I found what is called a LOVE CHEQUE.

Posted in: , , ,

Bonang Matheba came to my attention as Dbanj's rumored girlfriend but it later turned out they just met up and shared the photos for publicity. The South African TV presenter is single and the above picture she shared recently and the caption she put on it makes for a good idea for what you can do for Valentine's day if you're single. Bonang wrote that she had bought herself the white Mercedes, ‘….bought myself a Valentine’s Day gift. Single girl problems’.

If you're single, giving yourself a gift is just one way of pampering yourself this February 14th, and even if you're married, the following tips will also be useful for ideas on how to celebrate the day of love...

Top 10 Affordable Romantic Destinations To Spend Valentine’s Day

Posted in: , , , ,

By Chinelo Ngene

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner! And as excited as we are about sharing love a whole lot more than I’m hoping we all do every day (because love shouldn’t be reserved solely for the 14th of February), we’re slightly wary about the fact that it’s election day in Nigeria. This may or may not mean many will be faced with the choice of either showing love to the lover or to the country, although I don’t see why you can’t do both.

If you would rather not be here when all the election drama is going down, then a Valentine’s Weekend getaway is exactly what you need! With only a few weeks left to Valentine’s Day, we know that many of you haven’t made any plans yet. Don’t panic! Here's a list of the most affordable yet thrilling places to spend Valentine’s Day with that special someone.

Valentine's Day Boycott - An Ode to The Local Romance of the Nigerian Man

Posted in: , , , ,

By Baba Willy

In as much as sending out Christmas cards does not make one a Christian but only proves an ability to purchase and address card containing envelopes, I put it to you that purchasing a Valentine card with an accompanying present does not make one a romantic. What is romance after all? I am sure you will find the answer to that question is subject to personal interpretation. For some, receiving a gift of yards of lace material fits the bill. For others, a pat on the back followed by a kind word is enough. I have an issue with this Valentine’s Day thing. Let us go to the very beginning.

Dear Myne - He Didn't Buy Me Anything For Valentine

Posted in: , , ,

Good day. I have been in a relationship since November last year. We met on Facebook and became fast friends. We are from the same place and live in the same city so we met offline quickly and soon began our relationship.

At 1st we talked everyday and chatted on BBM constantly. That was short lived as before long, he started being tied up with work and he really works - from Monday to Friday then on Saturday also till 12noon. So the calls dwindled. I realised that I was the one doing everything in the relationship. When I talk to him about this, he apologises and promises to do better.

Well, Vals day came and what I got was Happy Valentine's Day, Sweetie via bbm. No call, no text (he's never sent me a love text by the way) not evn a dp on bbm. This, while I spent about 20k getting him stuff for vals day. Not that I regret what I spent because I love making people feel loved and special.

When I went to his house that evening, he was very happy about the cake and other stuff I got for him. I told him I wasn't happy that he didn't get anything for me. His excuse was that he was broke. That really hurt me because although I know he spent money moving to his new place, it wasn't like I was expecting a car or a yatch. No matter how small, its the thought that matters.

For Those Who Are Single This Valentine

Posted in: , ,

The stores are decorated in candy hearts, flowers and bears. Every TV or radio commercial reminds you that it’s time to remember your sweetheart on this special day for lovers. Your feelings range from sadness, to revulsion to anger. What’s a single person to do?

The following suggestions are designed to both answer that question and to help you have a good day after all, while working to make it your last solo one.

Celebrate the day by planning an activity that is meaningful and enjoyable to you:

- Go to a day spa for “the works”
- Plan an intimate dinner for 3 or 4
- Go ice-skating or to the movies with a fun friend
- Go out to dinner and a movie with a group of other singles
- Focus on what you enjoy and make a conscious decision about how to mark the day
- Un-Valentine's Day parties are very popular and can be a lot of silly fun. You can attend one or throw one of your own.

Should you spend Valentine with your Wife or Girlfriend?

Posted in: ,

Someone sent me a link to this video made by Battabox which asked men the question above. Honestly, I didn't know whether to laugh or shake my head. Is the assumption in Nigeria then that most married men have girlfriends too, to the extent of ditching their wives on Valentine's Day? Am I being naive to think this is a crazy, stupid question? Or is it a valid topic of discussion? I want to hear from those who live in Nigeria, please. The video itself is quite crappy, but you can see it here.

Get a Free Divorce for Valentine in Michigan

Posted in: ,

I thought I'd seen it all when I read on Vera's blog about a funeral company offering their service as the perfect Valentine gift. It is so morbid, but in some ways can be seen as romantic - you guys will be together till death and not even that will separate you - and funtional. Now some lawyers are taking it a step further, offering a valentine contest with the prize being a free divorce. Again, this gift is not for me. In fact I reject am though the lawyer offering up believes he's being nice in doing it.

He got the idea, he tells ABC News, when one of his students in a night school class he teaches invited him to a party. "She'd just had her divorce finalized," says Bentley, "and she was celebrating. I'd never thought about that before—celebrating divorce. So, I thought, why not do something special for Valentine's Day? You can't find a new love before you close the chapter on the old."

Bentley's website gives contest rules: "The winner will be chosen based on the most compelling and convincing story as to why they should be the winner. The divorce is limited to an uncontested divorce with no or minimum child custody issues." It's limited to Michigan residents. The deadline for applying is 11:59 p.m. EST on February 12.

Men Spend More For Valentine's Day Than Women

Posted in: , ,

The telegraph UK used the title, "Men are more romantic than women" to discuss the results of a consumer poll which wanted to know the spending habits of both men and women for Valentine's Day. I'm not surprised that it turned out that more men spend loads more money and go the extra mile in choosing gifts than women, after all, that's the way it has been commercialized. Using that to say men are more romantic than women may be stretching it.

Just days before the most romantic day of the year, it emerged that women are 50 per cent more likely to ignore the event altogether. Figures also show that more women are also more likely to mark the day with nothing more than a card, shunning any extravagant show of affection. The disclosure was made in a survey of around 2,000 men and women by the researchers Consumer Intelligence in the run up to Valentine’s Day on February 14.

The poll found that around 21.5 per cent of women said they would do nothing to celebrate, compared with just 14.5 per cent of men. It emerged that more than a quarter of women relied on sending a card – up from 16 per cent of men.

Agbani gets Old School Love Letter from Miabaga.com

Posted in: , , ,

My Dearest Agbani Darego,

Will you be my valentine?

Do give this the utmost consideration. If you will be my valentine, let me say that I am, first, of all men most privileged, and second, about to engage in heavy research about what being someone’s valentine actually entails.
If you will not be my valentine, I must assume this is only because you would prefer me to ask you to marry me. If so, poste haste and with rapidity in extremis, I would, My Sweetling, desire your hand- and as much of the rest of you as possible -in blissful matrimony.

But wait. I traverse ahead of myself. I have not introduced myself. Sure I have spent many hours ogling over your Instagram photos and following you closely on Twitter, but I have never, as it were, had the opportunity of introducing myself.

Dare Art Alade - February Man Candy #5

Posted in: , ,

Dare Art Alade has been married for 6 years [together with his wife for 8 - 9 years] and they have two children. On what he thinks are the secrets to making his marriage work, he says;

There is no magic about it, it’s just about getting along. If you work together, it even makes it better which we do; sharing ideas and doing a lot of projects together. Also, respecting each other is very important. We are two different people and you can’t change anyone. You can only be supportive and encourage each other and that is what we’ve done.

In a marriage, you’ve got to be humble. Nigerian men are fond of being too braggadocios and hard. Every coin has two sides and if you realize that without the other side, you won’t even have a coin, then you know that it’s not that you’re more than the other person or the other person is more than you. You also have to praise each other; praise that person when their praise is due so the person can also praise you when your praise is due.
See the rest of his album below;
